Wounded Mumbai face Delhi as both teams look to open their account

Star-studded Mumbai Indians take on an underperforming Delhi Daredevils in an important encounter at the Wankhede today. Mumbai must be kicking themselves for not being able to finish off both their opening games which they lost by the narrowest of margins. But they would like to put behind the losses and look to start afresh by grabbing a win against fellow strugglers Delhi Daredevils.

The last time when these two sides met, it was a day to forget for the team from the capital when they were bundled out for 66 in the chase of 213. Although the squad this season looks to be a much stronger one, Delhi still needs to get the best out of everything. They were outclassed in the first game after a poor bowling performance but should have considered themselves unlucky in the second match where rain played spoilsport.

Both teams have a common problem, and that is at the top of the order. The opening combination of Maxwell and Munro has failed for Delhi and will need to get it right at the earliest. Maxwell has been trying some wild slogs, but he’ll need to connect better. Runs on the board will be a must keeping in mind the depth in batting that Mumbai Indians possess. Leaking runs will make things more difficult for them and their bowlers will need to strike at regular intervals to restrict Mumbai.

For Mumbai, Rohit Sharma’s poor run has been something to greatly worry about, and he’ll be hoping to get back to form. The openers have been able to get starts but will need to capitalize on them. Keiron Pollard is yet to show his blitz while has done so often to push the total at the end of the innings. Star bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mustafizur Rahman too have gone for runs and will have to improve. The biggest positive for Mumbai has been the young leggie Mayank Markande. His 7 wickets at less then 6 runs an over have been talked about greatly, and the youngster will look forward to continuing his great form. Another area of concern for Mumbai will be the availability of all-rounder Hardik Pandya. He was seen during the optional practice session but is not sure to be fit in time for the match. Krunal Pandya will need to take up the responsibility in case his brother does not make it to the playing Xl.

Losing the initial few games has not been new for Mumbai, as they have made up for the losses by putting together a streak of wins in the later stages. But Delhi Daredevils have always struggled to get going from the start of the season. This probably is the best squad they have got as compared to the last few years and should be performing much better than they are.

Prediction: Mumbai Indians
Due to the depth in batting, and a much better bowling lineup, Mumbai are the favorites on paper unless Delhi makes some changes to the squad. Delhi has some star batsmen, but bowling looks weak.
