Goan football has been under a downhill in last few months and problems seem to like growing every single day. Goa is well known for its football but that may not be the case if current down hill of Goan football continues.
Goan football survival now entirely remain in the Goa Professional League, since there is just one football club from Goa in the top division of Indian football, unlike the past where there used to be 4-5 Goan clubs dominating Indian football. The Goan football has been gripped with unemployment and number of players giving up football for some other profession is growing in the state.
Goa needs to focus on their Professional league now to focus providing employment and regain its lost value. Having said that GFA has taken rather vapid demand of whopping 50 lakhs rupees from FC Goa to allow them to participate in Goa professional league.
GFA is planning to expand their top division league from 10 teams to 12 teams after a successful experiment with FC Bardez. FC Bardez was a great success in bringing fans to the league last year and GFA hoping to add one more team which will bring the same buzz in the league. They are potentially looking at FC Goa to fill the 12th slot in the league but demands are a way too high for the Indian super league franchise.
FC Goa had planned to start a reserve side under the leadership of Derrick Pereira and field young side in the Goa Professional League. This if materialize would be path breaking move by Indian super league franchise. GFA demands have not gone well with the FC Goa management and they might rethink of starting a reserve side for Goa Professional league if GFA continues to demand 50 Lakhs rupees.
Goan football is in the dire state and needs major push quickly for the survival of football. FC Goa may be coming from cash rich side but the demands of GFA is unrealistic considering the value Goa Professional League provides.
GFA on other hands should reduce the fee and accept FC Goa with an open arm. Having FC Goa along with the heavy weights like Dempo, Sporting Clube de Goa, Salgaocar, Churchill Brothers etc will raise the value of Goa professional league.
Raising the profile of Goa Professional league should be the main agenda of Goa football association at present. FC Goa most likely to bring fans to the stands and will definitely make some headlines in the media.
FC Goa and GFA should start working together for the young Goan footballers and Goan football. It is always wise to have something rather than have nothing. Hopefully, GFA President Elvis Goes will take favorable decision in the favor of football in Goa.
