Liverpool’s ever-leaky defense continued to underperform and was made to pay heavily today at Wembley. Harry Kane made no mistake in making use of the defensive error as he drove home from the box to give Spurs the lead in the 4th minute itself.
Liverpool was on the receiving end once again in the 12th minute as Son Heung Min converted yet another defensive lapse from Dejan Lovren. Liverpool pulled one back midway through the first half through Mohammad Salah; a goal that could have been avoided had Hugo Lloris come off his line. In the second half, Dele Alli restored Tottenham’s 2 goal cushion as Vertonghen’s shot was poorly cleared by Joel Matip. Harry Kane completed the destruction of the Merseyside team from the backpass free-kick as Simon Mignolet handled a back pass.
English Premier League: Spurs Thrashed Liverpool FC
Liverpool started with both Henderson and Milner in midfield with Wijnaldum dropping to the bench. After an excellent performance in midweek and a very good defensive performance in a goalless draw last weekend, Liverpool would have hoped to continue the momentum, but with this miserable defense, they will achieve nothing.
All 4 goals conceded due to defensive lapses just tells us the entire story. Liverpool has now conceded 15 goals away from home, and that the highest in the League.
Spurs have now won 5 consecutive games at Wembley and with this form, they are surely going for silverware. They now go level with second-placed Manchester United. A win against them next week will take them second in the League.
Meanwhile, Liverpool slipped one place to 9th and continue to struggle. Until and unless their defensive issued are sorted, there seems to be no improvement for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
