Champions League: English quintet await round of 16

The English Clubs Dominances

This is the first time in the history 5 English clubs have made it to the knockout round of the Champions League. There are huge talks about Premier League clubs dominating Europe once again.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea all qualified from the group stage, making England the first country to have so many sides through to the knockout phase.

The dominance of the English clubs in the group stage was clearly visible, the 5 lost just 3 matches and scored whopping 80 goals. Surprisingly the Premier League defending champions Chelsea was the only club not to win the group. The other 4 has progressed as group winners.

The teams from the same nations will not be playing against each other in the Round of 16. The draw of the round of 16 will take place at Uefa’s Nyon headquarters, as will the group winners and runners-up. Teams who were in the same group cannot meet again at this stage either.

This will be first Round of 16 matches of Jose Mourinho since 2013/14. After losing to Manchester City and possibly they may find it hard to win the Premier League, his focus will be on Champions League. We should not get surprised if we see a Manchester Derby in the final of the Champions League.

Having said that, it might be bit difficult. Despite winning the group, Jose Mourinho, Manchester United will face either Real Madrid, Juventus or Bayern Munich who were runner-ups in their groups.

Can Non-English win it again?

The last time an English club won the Champions League was back in 2012. Since then German and Spanish clubs have dominated the competition. Especially the Spanish Giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid has dominated Champions League in recent times.  This season could be a different season for both of them in the Champions League, Barcelona is plagued with injuries to some key players while Real Madrid having a horrible season.

The Round of 16 will throw a lot of surprises but the form is in the favor of the Premier League clubs. Can we get a premier league club lifting the champions league trophy in Ukraine?
